We have yet to have anyone tell us that their absolute ideal dream home would be an apartment. However apartments are in general much more economical than other kinds of property and have many benefits that make them the best option for many people - especially those that are looking for a holiday home or part time residence.

Although almost all Spanish towns have a number of apartment blocks and apartments are by far and away the most common form of habitation in Spain, it tends to be only those that are in the coastal resorts and on golf courses that appeal to the Northern European buyer. Of these the majority have communal pools, gardens and sports facilities and are almost always close to local amenities. They often also benefit from secure private parking for the residents, together with separate security doors at the entrance with intercom or video entry systems - giving you peace of mind that you can lock up and leave your property when you are not in residence.

All apartment blocks, under Spanish law, form a community of residents that elects their own president and vice-president on an annual basis. These in turn generally employ an administration company to manage the upkeep and maintenance of the building and facilities. As an owner of an apartment, you will have to pay a community fee which pays for this as well as for insurance of the building as a whole.

So, if you:

• are looking for a property that is walking distance to the beach or golf course,
• want to have the use of a pool, garden area and/or sports facilities but without the hassle and expense of maintaining them yourself,
• want peace of mind on the security of your property when you are not using it,
• want to be close to shops, bars, restaurants and transport links,
• and don’t have the budget for a luxury villa,

...then an apartment is probably for you.
